Mostly cool weather crops peas can be grown Autumn through to early Spring but care needs to be taken to avoid frost during the flowering stage as they’ll be damaged. Always plant direct for a high success rate at 2.5cm deep with 10cm apart in rows with stakes if needed. Peas need full sun and plenty of air flow as humidity can attract fungus and mould. Water well once only as too much water throughout the germination period will drown the seed and is often the cause of low germination rates. Once the seedling appears this is a great time to gently mulch and watering is okay. We recommend a well composted solid with some garden lime and a good organic fertiliser for better success. Remember like most legumes peas add nitrogen into your soil so consider this carefully when removing spent plants by chopping them back into the soil instead.
